Did you know that the First Company to start offering social media services was called Six Degrees?
Yes, that’s right! And NO, it wasn’t MySpace. Six Degrees ran from 1997 to 2001 by a gentleman called Andrew Weinreich from New Jersey. Andrew is actually a serial entrepreneur and has started up many different businesses. One thing I liked about Andrew is how he started Six Degree’s, he didn’t just run with the first thought of starting the company. He said “I waited to see if I still liked the idea 3 months later.” And despite the negative feedback he received from family & friends, he still went on to start the first social media network.
Anyway, I said all this to establish that social media has been around for quit some time. The concept of us communicating dates back to early 1800s with the first telegram in 1838. So, I hope you can see we have always wanted to stay in contact with our family and friends. To add to that Social Media has always played an important part of our lives, no wonder it has grown to what it is today. With that said lest fast forward to 2019. First question, I get asked a lot is:
How does Social Media play an important part in a Business?
The key to any successful business is customers, would you not agree? With no customers, there is no sales and to put it simply, a business just can’t flourish with no customers. With so many social media platforms out there, we can see this is where we will find our potential customers, were call this “ modern day networking.” So we start marketing to our potential customers on these platforms, to let them know we exist, right? Let’s start by looking at some of our Social Media Platforms. We’re look at 5 top performing platforms to understand what each one specializes in:
1. Facebook/Instagram...with currently 2.41 billion active monthly users(and growing) as of 2019. Facebook is the biggest social media network worldwide. It would be safe to say that our potential customers would be found on this platform. By advertising to find new customers/clients. It’s a little more involved than just posting an ad. As mentioned before in my last article you need to go to Facebook business and set up your ad account. First thing you wanna do is ALWAYs give Facebook what it wants. What does it want you might be asking? Facebook likes video ads that are 2 minutes or less. Yes, you can use pictures but they do not perform the best if: A) they have a lot of text in them. B) if they are low quality pictures(png is best when using pictures). We like to stick to videos cause they perform the best and to add to that Facebook has a stories section and news feed. Videos performs well in these sections. Not excluding your Facebook messenger. So a good understanding of how each section can benefit your ads is key. This is great also for businesses like ie shopping stores(if you have a product) also if you are offering a service, like a real estate agency. This is not to say that any other businesses outside of what I have already mentioned will not do well on Facebook. The key to any advertisement is knowing your customer or client. Here are a few examples of this: what type of things does your customer like to do? *Does he/she like to go to the gym everyday? *Do they read a lot of books? *Or do they travel a lot for work? These type of questions will enable you to tell exactly where you would find them, most like to be a part of a Facebook group. Referring to our first question about the gym, they would be a part of fitness group. The next one would be a part of a book reading group, or part of a group named after their favorite author. The final one a travel group. From asking not only these questions but others too. You are able to start targeting your potential customer, when setting up your ads on Facebook. Now I know I didn’t mention this earlier, but Facebook also owns Instagram too. Instagram has 1 billion monthly users. Just another huge social media. Instagram itself consist mainly of pictures and videos they run, with limited texting. This is why I said earlier videos perform better. Instagram has its stories section, your own personal IGTV(InstaGram Television) for each account. The stories are good for your followers, IGTV shows to people outside of your following for 24 hours (BIG tip: you always utilize FREE marketing), and finally you still have your feed placement. Instagram’s hash-tagging system is great way to target your potential customers, but understanding the insights behind this can get quit confusing. To put it simply instagram & Facebook are excellent for advertising as you really get 2 platforms in 1. And with such a broad range of users and the right Social Media Manager you will scale fast.
2. LinkedIn....has over 575 + users of that 260 actively use on a monthly basis. Just like instagram & Facebook. LinkedIn has news feed placement. But what you should know most is that LinkedIn is where you will find the Big CEOs of companies with over 50,000 employees ie Coke. This makes it great if you are company that does head hunting and want decision from the decision maker. Generating leads for B2B, than LinkedIn is where you want to run your ads. It’s targeting is very specific and will get your foot in the front door for your B2B marketing.
3. Google...with Google offering several services not only to Android. It now has 2 Billion active users, also owns Youtube. This platform is about knowing your PPC(pay per click). You need someone actively monitoring your keywords. Also has an good understanding of the keywords and how much Google is asking for each keyword. PPC can itself get expensive if you don’t know how much your paying. It is best if you have SEO(Search Engine Optimization) in place and are trying to rank your website for those keywords you have listed. Suggestion: PPC should always be your short-term solution, while you are waiting for SEO ranking. Youtube however is huge, with over 5 Billion users. Running a Youtube ad campaign has for us seen many customer’s success. The platform also offers a subscriber system for your channel, where a potential customers or users can subscribe to your channel. Now, if you are able to get 50,000 plus subscribers. You can monetize your channel. In simple words you can “make a lot of money” off this alone. Youtube because of it’s huge success of users within the last couple years, has caused Facebook & Instagram to incorporate videos. That is why you have IGTV and Facebook Live. Understanding the metrics of these platforms can be confusing but when utilized correctly will scale your business quickly.
Before I conclude let me say there are other platforms which I did not mention, which can scale your business ie twitter, Pinterest, and Snapchat. But when it comes to any platform you just simply need someone that understands the platform and KPIs. But most importantly knows and understands your goals and what is your ideal customer.
