Plumber called me. Eighty-seven five-star reviews. Competitor across town: twenty-four reviews, also five stars on average. The plumber outranks the competitor exactly zero times on the queries that matter most. The plumber is paying for Google Ads to compensate.

We pulled up both Google Business Profiles. The competitor's primary category was the exact phrase buyers type. The plumber's primary category was adjacent but not exact. The competitor had posted weekly for six months; the plumber had not posted in nine months. The competitor had filled every available field; the plumber had four fields blank.

Review count is a signal. It is not the only signal. The local-pack ranking algorithm reads roughly ten signals; review count is one of them. A competitor with fewer reviews and stronger structural signals outranks a competitor with more reviews and weaker signals. The system rewards what it can read.

Plumber asked: should I just keep asking for reviews? The honest answer was: keep asking, and also fix the four other signals you are losing on. The review-asking continues; the structural fixes close the gap inside 30 days.
