ChatGPT Ads first 14 days: what to check and when

A new campaign needs enough attention to catch broken delivery and enough restraint to avoid changing five things before the first result can settle.

The direct answer

Separate repair decisions from learning decisions.

A broken campaign should be repaired now. A working campaign should be changed only when the evidence supports a specific move.

During the first two weeks, check whether the campaign is active, approved, serving, sending people to the intended page, recording the intended events, and producing the business outcome named before launch. These are different questions. A campaign can deliver impressions while the destination is wrong. Analytics can record visits while the CRM receives no inquiry. Ads Manager can show conversions before the sales owner knows whether they were qualified.

OpenAI provides campaign-list, trend, and CSV reporting for impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM, and conversions when measurement is configured. Use those signals with landing-page behavior and the final business record. Do not make the platform report carry an answer it cannot provide.

Repair a defect quickly. Change a working test deliberately.
01

Delivery

Is the intended campaign active, approved, eligible, and spending within the written boundary?

02

Path

Do clicks reach the right page, complete the intended action, and enter the business record?

03

Quality

Are the people, inquiries, purchases, or bookings worth paying to reach again?

01

Days 0 to 14

Use six checkpoints instead of constant tinkering.

Record each check with the date, time zone, campaign status, change, owner, and evidence.

WhenWhat to checkChange only when
Before launchObjective, conversion event, budget type, dates, locations, ad groups, context hints, ads, destinations, tracking, business owner, stop rule.A setting is wrong, a page fails, an event is missing, or the campaign exceeds the approved boundary.
First hoursActive status, review status, billing, dates, location, destination reachability, and any “not serving” reason. The platform identifies a setup, policy, payment, or delivery problem.
Day 1Impressions, clicks, spend, final URLs, page sessions, static parameters, primary event, inquiry or order handoff. The ad-to-page path is broken or the business record is absent.
Day 3Campaign, ad-group, and ad delivery; mobile page use; event reconciliation; early lead or purchase quality. One element is clearly malfunctioning or contradicts the approved offer.
Day 7Spend pace, bid cap, creative coverage, ad-group concentration, page action, conversion delay, and business outcomes.A written hypothesis explains the change and the remaining campaign can still answer the test question.
Day 14Total spend, delivery, clicks, page actions, conversions, quality, revenue or pipeline, and operating burden. The decision is continue, repair one constraint, expand carefully, narrow, pause, or stop.

A dated campaign log makes each later decision easier to interpret.

Keep the change log smaller than the performance report.

For every change, record what moved, why it moved, who approved it, and the earliest date when the result can be read. If three ads, two destinations, the bid cap, and the conversion event all change together, the next report cannot identify the useful cause.

OpenAI says a campaign objective cannot be changed after creation. For oCPC, the selected conversion event also cannot be changed. A different objective or event requires a new campaign. Do not turn that constraint into an accidental restart without preserving the original record.

02

Evidence chain

Reconcile the platform with the page and the business.

A mismatch is a question to investigate, not an automatic failure.

Ads ManagerDelivery, clicks, spend, objective, ad group, ad, and attributed conversions.
AnalyticsLanding page, sessions, device, engaged actions, consent, and tracking parameters.
Final recordQualified leads, appointments, sales, value, refunds, and customer status.

OpenAI notes that ad clicks and analytics sessions can differ because page loads, redirects, consent, browser blocking, attribution windows, and time zones are not the same measurement. Compare the same dates and time zone. Use campaign and ad-level CSV exports when the difference needs deeper checking.

Attributed conversions may take 24 to 48 hours to appear. Do not rebuild tracking at hour six because the Ads Manager total is still zero. First confirm that the page event happened, that the event name and value are correct, and that the business record exists.

For oCPC, optimization uses one selected standard conversion event, but billing remains per valid click. A high conversion count can still be commercially weak if the event is too easy or the resulting leads are poor.

03

Day-14 decision

Choose the next move from the constraint you can prove.

The first two weeks do not need to produce scale. They need to produce a defensible decision.

CONTINUE

The path works

Delivery, page action, measurement, and business quality are coherent enough to keep collecting evidence.

  • No major defect
  • Spend within boundary
  • Useful downstream signal
REPAIR

One constraint is visible

Fix the page, event, ad-group structure, creative coverage, bid cap, or handoff that is preventing a clean read.

  • One named cause
  • One controlled change
  • New review date
STOP

The test breaks its rule

Pause when spend, policy risk, offer mismatch, measurement failure, lead quality, or business burden crosses the written boundary.

  • Stop condition met
  • Evidence saved
  • No budget rescue attempt
The closing sentence

“We spent this amount to reach this audience condition, produced these page and business actions, found this constraint, and will make this one next move by this date.”

If the sentence cannot be written, the next task is evidence cleanup, not more spend.

OpenAI: Measure Results

Metrics, event segmentation, conversion delay, static parameters, and analytics differences.

Should a campaign be judged after 14 days regardless of volume?

No. Fourteen days is a structured decision point, not a promise of statistical certainty. If delivery or volume is low, the decision may be to continue inside the same boundary, repair a proven constraint, or stop because the test cannot produce useful evidence at an acceptable cost.

Can ChatGPT Ads reporting show the conversation or search term?

OpenAI says Ads Manager does not expose the individual ChatGPT search queries or search terms that generated clicks. Use the ad group, context hints, creative, landing page, and final business result without inventing query-level evidence.
