The availability restriction has changed
BigCommerce’s November 2 changelog says Conversational Search is available in all regions, including Australia, on Core, Growth, Scale and Performance plans. Customer and partner sandboxes and trial stores are also included. BigCommerce describes it as a free upgrade.
The product combines keyword matching with matching based on meaning. The store owner enables it under Settings > Search; the documentation says stores keep their existing behavior until they opt in.
Check the search setup already in place
A third-party search overlay can hide the native search results. BigCommerce says developers can test Conversational Search in the Storefront GraphQL Playground without disabling that overlay; testing it on the storefront requires removing the overlay from the experience.
Before enabling it, review the data-sharing notice shown in the setting. The documentation’s example identifies product-catalog text and shopper queries being sent to Mixlayer Labs Inc. Confirm that the displayed notice and your store’s requirements agree.
A relevant result has to fit the purchase
Our recommendation is to build a short test set from actual customer searches: exact model numbers, common product names, descriptive requests and queries that currently return nothing. Judge the first results against stock, size and compatibility requirements, not simply whether something appears.
Save the baseline before testing and note which search implementation served each result. Review product clicks, completed purchases and customer questions after a controlled trial. A broader set of matches can be useful, but an unsuitable substitute can make the customer’s decision harder.

What to check next
- Confirm the store plan, owner access and current search provider.
- Review the enablement notice and data-sharing details.
- Test exact identifiers and real descriptive searches before a storefront change.
- Record the baseline and use the documented opt-out if the trial does not meet the store’s needs.
Sources and scope
The November 2 announcement expands availability, including Australia. The documentation says the upgrade is opt-in and only the store owner can enable it. Availability does not establish results for a particular catalog or compatibility with an existing third-party search experience.
The announcement is confirmed by the source below. Practical checks in this article are Stan Consulting's recommendations.
