Google AI Max is opening billions of searches to ads. Which searches are worth buying?
Google can make more conversational searches eligible for an ad. That expands the market Google can sell. Your account still has to prove that the new queries, generated messages, landing pages, and conversions produce qualified business.
Stan Consulting verdict
Expanded reach deserves a test. It does not deserve automatic trust.
What happened: During Alphabet's July 22 earnings call, Google said AI Max was opening billions of searches that previously could not be monetized with ads. Current reporting also put Google advertising revenue at $81.6 billion for the quarter, up 14% year over year.
Those facts answer Google's business question. AI search can create more commercial inventory without collapsing the advertising engine. They do not answer the advertiser's question: did the extra inventory produce customers at an acceptable cost?
Google documents two main AI Max feature groups. Search-term matching expands beyond the account's existing keyword set. Asset optimization can customize text and use Final URL expansion to choose a different page from the advertiser's domain. Turn on the full bundle and three decisions can change at once: who sees the ad, what the ad says, and where the click lands.
More searches are an opportunity only when the account can separate useful new intent from expensive new eligibility.
Platform revenue proves that the platform found more ways to sell ads. Your result lives in qualified leads, booked work, purchases, contribution margin, repeat revenue, and the real cost of serving the added demand.
What changed
AI Max moves Search beyond a keyword-only buying model.
Search-term matching
Google says AI Max can use broad match, asset-based targeting, landing-page signals, and keywordless technology to find relevant queries beyond the advertiser's existing keywords.
- Longer conversational searches can become eligible.
- New source and match-type reporting can explain why a query matched.
- Brand controls and locations of interest can constrain parts of the expansion.
- Search-term quality still has to be reviewed against business outcomes.
Asset optimization
Text customization can generate headlines and descriptions from ads, assets, and website copy. Final URL expansion can choose another relevant page on the domain.
- The served message can differ from the original responsive search ad.
- The landing page can differ from the URL supplied in the ad.
- Pinned assets may not serve when Final URL expansion is active.
- URL exclusions and inclusions need deliberate maintenance.
Google has also moved AI Max out of beta and is folding older Search features into it. Campaign-level broad match and automatically created assets are scheduled to upgrade starting in September 2026. The Dynamic Search Ads transition was extended, but the direction is settled: query matching, copy, and page selection are becoming one optimization layer.

Decision guide
Match the account condition to the next move.
| What you find | What it means | Next move |
|---|---|---|
| New queries produce qualified outcomes at the same or better economics. | Expansion is finding useful demand. | Scale in bounded steps and keep query, page, and revenue reviews on the same cadence. |
| Conversion volume rises, but qualified leads or contribution margin fall. | The bidding signal rewards the wrong action or value. | Fix primary conversions and values before adding budget. |
| Useful queries land on weak or unrelated pages. | Final URL expansion has more domain access than the site can support. | Use exclusions, improve the right pages, or turn off expansion until the landing path is ready. |
| Generated copy changes the offer or required language. | Asset optimization is crossing a business boundary. | Remove the asset, narrow the setting, and document the approved message. |
| The campaign is budget-limited before the test. | Google warns that AI Max may not be effective under that constraint. | Choose a clean experiment or resolve the budget decision before reading the result. |
Measurement boundary
Count the new opportunity and the new waste on separate lines.
The first line is incremental reach: queries, impressions, clicks, and spend that did not exist in the baseline. The second is incremental quality: qualified leads, purchases, conversion value, revenue, contribution margin, and any service cost created by those outcomes.
Do not compare two periods by conversion count alone when the definition of a conversion changed, the landing-page mix moved, or the campaign started reaching different stages of intent. A call, form, qualified opportunity, and closed sale are different events.
An AI Max experiment can reduce guesswork because it diverts traffic and budget within an existing campaign. The test still needs a written win condition. Decide the qualified outcome, acceptable economics, excluded query classes, protected pages, and stop rule before the result arrives.
If AI Max adds cheap platform conversions but weakens qualified revenue, the test worked. It identified a setting, signal, or page path that should not scale yet.
