Shopify checkout remembers a signed-in customer's last payment method

The saved choice is now preselected on the next purchase. Returning-customer checkout deserves its own QA pass.

The update applies to saved payment methods

Shopify announced on August 21 that checkout remembers and preselects a signed-in customer's last-used payment method. The behavior applies to D2C and B2B checkout flows where saved payment methods are enabled.

The announcement does not establish a change to guest checkout or a measured improvement in conversion. Those are separate questions for the merchant to test.

A guest session will miss the returning-customer experience

Our recommendation is to test the same purchase path in a signed-out session and with an appropriate returning-customer test account. Record which payment option appears selected and whether choosing another method is clear.

Check any help text or screenshots that describe payment selection. Instructions written for a blank initial state may no longer match what a repeat buyer sees.

Keep payment QA separate from a conversion claim

A sensible default can reduce a decision, but that does not tell you how it affects completed orders. Do not announce a conversion lift simply because the checkout screen changed.

If the business evaluates the effect, keep returning and guest customers distinguishable and note other checkout changes made during the period. Avoid recording payment details in screenshots, tickets, or shared marketing documents.

For your next work session

What to check next

  1. Confirm that saved payment methods are enabled in the relevant checkout flow.
  2. Test signed-in and guest purchases separately, including changing the selected method.
  3. Refresh payment help copy where it no longer matches the screen.

Sources and scope

The announcement does not say that guest checkout changes or that conversion rates have improved.

The announcement is confirmed by the source below. Practical checks in this article are Stan Consulting's recommendations.
