Shopify POS can show an identified customer's online cart

The in-store handoff can begin with products left in an eligible online checkout. Access depends on a specific staff permission and customer context.

The cart appears only after several checks

Shopify's September 3 update lets authorized staff view products from an identified customer's eligible abandoned online checkout in Shopify POS v11.14. The customer needs an email address, the POS session needs location context, and the staff role needs the View abandoned checkouts permission.

The feature does not expose browsing history. That boundary belongs in staff training so a useful sales handoff does not get described as broader customer surveillance.

Permission comes before the sales script

Start with roles, not a blanket switch. Decide which employees need abandoned-checkout access to help with sizing, product questions, or an in-store purchase. Leave the permission off for roles that do not need it.

Our recommendation: run one controlled test with an eligible customer record and a store location selected. Record what the employee can see, what stays hidden, and what happens when a required condition is missing.

Measure the handoff without claiming a recovered sale

A cart appearing in POS does not establish that the store recovered revenue. If the team uses the feature, separate carts viewed, customers assisted, purchases completed, and later returns.

Keep the customer conversation practical. Ask whether the person wants help with the items. Do not imply that staff saw every page the customer visited.

What to check next

  1. Confirm every participating device is on Shopify POS v11.14.
  2. Grant View abandoned checkouts only to roles that need it.
  3. Test an eligible customer with the correct store location selected.
  4. Give staff one plain explanation of what is visible and what is not.
  5. Track assisted purchases separately from carts merely viewed.

Sources and scope

The feature requires Shopify POS v11.14, an identified customer with an email address, an eligible abandoned checkout, location context, and the View abandoned checkouts permission. It shows cart products, not browsing history.

The announcement is confirmed by the source below. Practical checks in this article are Stan Consulting's recommendations.
