October and March are different deadlines
Shopify's August 24 announcement gives app developers two dates to work toward. Creating or updating ScriptTag API resources stops on October 1, 2026. Existing storefront injections stop on March 1, 2027. Switching to an older API version will not delay either change.
The October cutoff can affect a vendor's ability to change an existing integration before the March shutdown arrives. Waiting for a visible storefront failure leaves little time to check the replacement.
The replacement depends on what the script does
Shopify directs storefront functionality toward app embed blocks in theme app extensions. Scripts used only for analytics or conversion data should move to web pixels. The announcement applies to the ScriptTag API, not every script element in a theme.
Our recommendation: ask for the name of the feature, its replacement, who activates it, and the test that will demonstrate it still works. An installed app alone does not tell the merchant whether the replacement is active.
What to ask the app vendor
Start with apps that change the storefront or collect conversion events. Have the vendor confirm whether it uses the affected API. A vendor that does not use it should be able to say so directly.
For affected apps, agree on a migration date and a rollback plan. Compare the customer-facing behavior and event records before removing the old integration. Keep the test separate from claims about sales performance.
For your next work session
What to check next
- List the affected apps and the storefront features each one supplies.
- Confirm the replacement and any activation work required from the merchant.
- Test the feature and conversion events before removing the old integration.
Sources and scope
This concerns Shopify's ScriptTag API, not every script element in a theme. App embeds need merchant activation; web pixels do not.
