Shopify tax calculations now follow the selected fulfillment location

US orders use the location selected by order routing. That gives checkout and finance teams another field to check when totals differ.

Shipping and pickup use different location decisions

Shopify's August 24 update ties tax calculation for US shipping orders to the fulfillment location chosen by order routing. Local pickup uses the pickup location. Order records also show the ship-from location used in the calculation.

The announcement concerns calculation behavior. It does not determine a merchant's tax obligations or mean every order total will change.

Check the order record before changing the promotion

A different total can send marketing teams toward the wrong explanation. Before changing a discount or checkout message, have the appropriate finance or tax owner inspect the recorded fulfillment location.

Our recommendation is to compare a representative shipped order and a pickup order. Note the destination, fulfillment decision, discount, and recorded tax. Keep personal customer details out of a general marketing QA document.

Make the handoff to finance specific

A useful issue report names the order and the field that looks wrong. Saying that checkout totals have changed leaves the next person to repeat the investigation.

If the recorded location matches the routing decision but the tax still needs review, take it to the person responsible for tax configuration. Do not edit tax settings as an advertising experiment or use a tax difference to explain campaign performance.

What to check next

  1. Review representative US shipping and pickup orders with finance.
  2. Match the recorded location to the fulfillment decision.
  3. Escalate tax questions to the responsible owner before editing checkout or promotional copy.

Sources and scope

This is a platform calculation change, not advice about a merchant's tax obligations or a claim that every order total will change.

The announcement is confirmed by the source below. Practical checks in this article are Stan Consulting's recommendations.
