Best Google Ads tools

Google already provides useful planning, editing, and reporting tools without another subscription. Start there. Add paid software only when account size or repeated work makes it worth the cost.

Start here

Fix measurement before adding software.

An ad tool cannot rescue a bad offer, a weak landing page, or a phone that is not answered. Confirm the conversion action and lead-quality check before automating anything.

Step 1

Define the useful action

Choose the action that matters: a qualified call, quote request, booked appointment, order, or sale. Do not optimize for page views.

Step 2

Use Google's free tools

Build demand with Keyword Planner, edit in Ads or Editor, plan only eligible campaigns, and report the result with Ads reports or Looker Studio.

Step 3

Read lead quality

Review the actual search term, page, call, form, sale, and cost. A cheap lead that never becomes a job is not cheap.

Four useful tools

Plan, edit, forecast, and report.

These four tools cover most small and midsize Google Ads work. They do not charge a separate subscription at the standard level. The media budget is still separate.

Search demand

Google Keyword Planner

Keyword Planner finds related search terms and estimates searches, competition, bid ranges, clicks, and cost for a selected market.

Price
Free inside Google Ads. An Ads account and billing setup may be required. Running ads costs extra.
Good for
Building a first keyword list, comparing local demand, estimating spend, and finding irrelevant terms to exclude.
Where to look
Open Tools > Planning > Keyword Planner. Use Keyword ideas for demand and Forecasts for estimated traffic and cost.
Limits
Volumes are rounded and forecasts are not promises. Low-volume terms may not appear. Results still depend on the ad, bid, page, location, season, and buyer.
Alternatives
Google Trends, Semrush Keyword Magic Tool, or Ahrefs Keywords Explorer.

How to use it

  1. Choose Discover new keywords or Get search volume and forecasts.
  2. Enter real services or products, or use a relevant website page.
  3. Set the exact location, language, network, and date range.
  4. Remove research, job-seeker, DIY, and irrelevant product terms.
  5. Move only commercial terms into a plan and inspect the forecast.

Budget forecasting

Google Performance Planner

Performance Planner models what eligible campaigns might do under different spend, bid, and target settings.

Price
Included with Google Ads. There is no separate subscription.
Good for
Comparing budget scenarios and seeing the forecasted tradeoff between spend and conversions.
Where to look
Open Tools > Planning > Performance Planner. Read the performance curve, campaign table, and Suggested changes.
Limits
New or low-data campaigns may be ineligible. Forecasts refresh and are not guarantees. Display and Video planning were removed in March 2026.
Alternatives
Google Ads budget simulator, Optmyzr budget pacing, or Shape.

How to use it

  1. Create a plan and choose the date, channel, and useful result metric.
  2. Choose eligible campaigns and add the real conversion goal.
  3. Review the curve at several spend levels.
  4. Open Suggested changes and check each campaign change.
  5. Export or apply only after reviewing the landing page and lead-quality reality.

Reporting

Looker Studio

Looker Studio turns Google Ads and other data into shareable dashboards with scorecards, trends, filters, and campaign tables.

Price
Looker Studio Standard is no-cost. Pro is paid per licensed user through Google Cloud billing; check the live signup price.
Good for
Reusable reports combining Ads, Analytics, Search Console, Sheets, or CRM data.
Where to look
Use Resource > Manage added data sources for connections. Use each chart's Setup panel for dimensions, metrics, filters, and dates.
Limits
It reports but does not optimize. Bad joins and mismatched metric definitions can create false totals. Data freshness varies by connector.
Alternatives
Google Ads Reports, GA4 Explorations, or AgencyAnalytics.

How to use it

  1. Create a report and add the Google Ads connector.
  2. Choose the exact account and confirm access.
  3. Add spend, useful conversions, cost per conversion, and conversion value where valid.
  4. Add a campaign table, trend, date control, and device or campaign filter.
  5. Compare the dashboard to the source account before sharing it.

Quick cost check

What you can start with.

Google Ads Editor, Keyword Planner, Performance Planner, and Looker Studio Standard do not require a separate tool subscription. Google Ads spend and any implementation or paid connector work are separate.

Keep it current

Where to look when a tool or rule changes.

Prices, screens, ad rules, and AI search behavior change. We keep short dated updates in Pulse and real observations in Notes. Use this guide for the setup. Use those pages for what changed.

Google changes campaign eligibility and planning features. Performance Planner removed Display and Video planning and impression-share metric plans on March 9, 2026.
