Current Google Ads controls this Pulse tracks
AI Max and Performance Max controls change over time, so dated interface evidence belongs in Pulse. Before enabling a new automation or migration, record the current setting, conversion goal, URL behavior, brand controls, budget limit, change date, and rollback path.

Q031
What is Google Ads AI Max and should advertisers use it?
AI Max is an optimization layer inside Search campaigns, not a separate campaign type. Google says it can expand search-term matching, customize text, change landing pages through final URL expansion, and add brand, location, URL, and reporting controls. Test it when conversion data is reliable and the site can safely support dynamic landing pages. Do not enable every feature blindly in a budget-limited or poorly tracked campaign.
Use this rule: Run an experiment only after primary conversions, values, brand rules, URL exclusions, tracking templates, and landing-page quality are verified; keep controls off when the business cannot accept dynamic matching or copy.
Example: Split a stable Search campaign with a one-click experiment. Hold budget and conversion definitions constant, then compare qualified conversion value, search terms, landing pages, brand share, and cost over one full sales cycle.
Field note: AI Max can hide a landing-page problem behind more reach. Review the new search-term, headline, URL, source, and landing-page reporting together.
Q032
What should advertisers do before Dynamic Search Ads move to AI Max?
Google updated the transition schedule: automatic DSA upgrades are now expected to begin in February 2027, not September 2026. Before then, inventory dynamic ad groups, page feeds, URL rules, negatives, tracking templates, brand controls, conversion definitions, and current performance. Test AI Max on a controlled campaign, inspect its search terms and landing pages, and preserve a dated baseline plus rollback settings before any migration.
Use this rule: Migrate only after the AI Max setup reproduces required exclusions, tracking, conversion quality, and landing-page control; delay optional features that cannot pass the test.
Example: Use a 30-day baseline and one full conversion-lag window for the experiment. Compare accepted leads or conversion value, not raw conversions, and audit every dynamic landing page that spends above a set threshold.
Field note: The schedule change creates time to test, not permission to wait. Mapping old DSA controls now prevents an automatic setting from becoming the first inventory review.
Q033
How do you control brand traffic in Performance Max?
Use brand exclusions when Performance Max should not serve on your own or specified brands; Google says these exclusions apply to Search and Shopping ads, with an option to keep Shopping for excluded brand terms. Campaign or account negative keywords can add query control. Separate brand and non-brand reporting, inspect search terms, and test whether excluded brand traffic produces incremental value elsewhere before declaring savings.
Use this rule: Exclude brand when another campaign owns it or when the goal is non-brand acquisition; retain controlled brand exposure when Shopping coverage or incremental testing supports it.
Example: Report spend, conversions, value, and new-customer rate for brand and non-brand terms before the exclusion. Then compare four weeks after, while checking whether Search or Shopping captured the displaced demand.
Field note: Removing brand from PMax can make its reported efficiency fall while total account truth improves. Judge the account and customer mix, not the campaign ROAS alone.
Q034
Should you turn on final URL expansion in Google Ads?
Turn on final URL expansion when the website has several strong, query-relevant landing pages and you can exclude pages that should never receive paid traffic. Leave it off when legal copy, pricing, geography, tracking, pinned messaging, or a tightly controlled funnel requires one destination. In AI Max for Search, it is enabled by default with text customization and can ignore pinned assets when another URL is selected.
Use this rule: Enable only after crawling the eligible URL set, adding exclusions, testing tracking templates, and confirming every possible landing page can convert and make compliant claims.
Example: Start with one campaign. Exclude policy, support, hiring, and irrelevant blog URLs; review every selected landing page with meaningful spend for 30 days; compare qualified value and landing-page errors against the fixed-URL baseline.
Field note: The decision is a site-quality test as much as an Ads setting. Expansion gives Google permission to expose whichever eligible page best matches the query.
Q037
Should you use Performance Max or Search campaigns?
Use Search when query intent, exclusions, and message control are central to the sale. Test Performance Max when you have reliable conversion values, enough approved assets, safe landing pages, and feedback from qualified outcomes. Google describes Performance Max as complementary to keyword-based Search, not a mandatory replacement. Compare them through a controlled experiment rather than moving the whole budget on a recommendation card.
Use this rule: Keep Search as the control when exact query learning matters; test Performance Max only when measurement and asset inputs are strong enough to judge incremental value.
Example: Hold one primary conversion and conversion value definition constant for an eight-week experiment, then compare qualified gross profit, not raw conversion counts, after the normal sales lag matures.
Field note: The real choice is not automation versus manual control. It is whether the business can supply a reliable value signal across inventory where query-level visibility is thinner.
