Checkout can collect another channel preference
Shopify announced on September 10 that merchants can collect WhatsApp marketing consent during checkout. The field is enabled from Checkout settings.
The timing matters because the customer can choose the channel while their contact and order details are already being collected. The store still needs to verify how that choice is stored and passed to its messaging tools.
Consent capture is not a messaging plan
The checkbox does not decide which messages a subscriber should receive, which templates are approved, or how frequently the business should send. Write those rules before treating the new field as list growth.
Our recommendation: separate order support, service messages, and marketing campaigns in the test plan. A checkout preference for marketing should not be used as a vague permission for every WhatsApp message.
Test the record before starting a campaign
Place one opted-in test order and one opted-out test order. Inspect the customer record, timestamp, phone format, integration payload, and suppression behavior in every connected tool.
If the consent state does not arrive intact, pause the campaign setup and fix the data path. A visible checkout field is not proof that the messaging platform received the same choice.

What to check next
- Enable WhatsApp consent in Checkout settings on a controlled test.
- Place one opted-in and one opted-out order.
- Inspect the customer record, timestamp, and phone format.
- Verify the consent state in each connected messaging tool.
- Document message types, frequency, and unsubscribe handling before sending.
Sources and scope
The Shopify setting collects a checkout preference. It does not create a messaging program, supply approved templates, configure an integration, or replace the merchant's legal and regional consent review.
The announcement is confirmed by the source below. Practical checks in this article are Stan Consulting's recommendations.
