SEO and AI search tools | Updated July 28, 2026

Best SEO and AI search tools

Start with the free tools that show whether search engines can find the site and whether people click. Pay for a larger SEO tool only when you need deeper competitor, keyword, or backlink work.

Start here

Start here

Set up the free truth sources first.

No SEO or AI visibility tool can promise a ranking or citation. The useful stack starts with the search engines, then adds behavior and competitor data.

Step 1

Verify the site

Connect Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools to the real domain. Submit the sitemap and check important URLs.

Step 2

Read demand and behavior

Use query and page reports to see what appears in search. Use Clarity to see what visitors do after they arrive.

Step 3

Add paid research only when needed

Use Ahrefs when you need competitor keywords, backlink research, recurring crawls, or tracked AI prompts beyond the free tools.

Four useful tools

Use each tool for one clear job.

Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools show search-engine data. Clarity shows visitor behavior. Ahrefs adds deeper crawling and competitive research. They answer different questions.

Google search data

Google Search Console

Search Console shows Google queries, clicks, impressions, average position, indexing, page experience signals, submitted sitemaps, and individual URL status.

Price
Free.
Good for
Seeing whether Google can index the site and which searches already produce visibility or clicks.
Where to look
Open Performance > Search results for queries and pages. Use URL Inspection for one page and Sitemaps for site discovery.
Limits
It reports Google data only. Recent data can change as Google processes it. Average position is not a promise that every searcher sees the same rank.
Alternatives
Bing Webmaster Tools for Bing data; Google Analytics for on-site behavior.

How to use it

  1. Add the real domain property and verify ownership.
  2. Submit https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.
  3. Inspect the home page and the most important service or product pages.
  4. Open Performance and compare the last 28 days with the prior 28 days.
  5. Sort by clicks, impressions, and query intent before changing a page.

Bing and IndexNow

Bing Webmaster Tools

Bing Webmaster Tools shows search performance, indexing, backlinks, keyword research, site scans, URL submission, and IndexNow support.

Price
Free.
Good for
Checking Bing discovery and adding another search-engine source for SEO and AI search work.
Where to look
Use Search Performance, URL Inspection, Site Scan, and IndexNow or URL submission.
Limits
Bing traffic is usually smaller than Google traffic. Its data and crawl decisions do not guarantee visibility in Copilot or other AI answers.
Alternatives
Google Search Console and Yandex Webmaster where relevant.

How to use it

  1. Sign in and import the verified site from Search Console when available.
  2. Submit the XML sitemap.
  3. Inspect important pages and resolve real crawl or index errors.
  4. Run Site Scan and separate technical defects from optional suggestions.
  5. Enable IndexNow through the site platform when supported.

Visitor behavior

Microsoft Clarity

Clarity adds anonymized session recordings, heatmaps, funnels, filters, and behavior signals such as dead clicks and repeated clicks.

Price
Free forever with no stated traffic limit.
Good for
Seeing whether search visitors understand the page after they arrive.
Where to look
Use Recordings, Heatmaps, and saved filters for source, device, landing page, and conversion path.
Limits
It does not show search rankings and it does not run A/B tests. Privacy and consent setup still matter.
Alternatives
Google Analytics 4, Hotjar, Lucky Orange, or Shopify Analytics.

How to use it

  1. Create a project for the real domain.
  2. Install the tracking code once through the site or tag manager.
  3. Confirm real visits appear.
  4. Filter to organic search and the pages you are trying to improve.
  5. Watch a small set of relevant sessions, then confirm the pattern in a heatmap or funnel.

SEO research

Ahrefs

Ahrefs crawls sites and provides keyword, competitor, backlink, rank-tracking, content, and AI visibility research.

Price
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for verified sites. Starter is $29 per month. Current main plans shown are Lite at $129, Standard at $249, and Advanced at $449 per month.
Good for
Deeper competitor, backlink, content-gap, crawl, rank, and tracked-prompt research.
Where to look
Use Site Audit for crawl issues, Site Explorer for competitors and backlinks, and Brand Radar or tracked prompts for sampled AI visibility.
Limits
Plans and usage credits rise quickly. AI prompt tracking is a sample. A high tool score does not mean the buyer path is good.
Alternatives
Semrush, Screaming Frog, Ubersuggest, or the free search-engine tools.

How to use it

  1. Verify the real site in Ahrefs Webmaster Tools before paying.
  2. Run Site Audit and fix high-confidence issues that affect real pages.
  3. Use Site Explorer on two or three direct competitors, not giant publishers.
  4. Save only keywords and pages tied to a real service, product, or buyer question.
  5. Upgrade only when the free limits block a recurring task.

Quick cost check

What you can start with.

Keep it current

Where to look when a tool or rule changes.

Prices, screens, ad rules, and AI search behavior change. We keep short dated updates in Pulse and real observations in Notes. Use this guide for the setup. Use those pages for what changed.

AI search reporting is still changing. Treat prompt trackers as a sample, not a complete count of who can see or cite the business.
